香川に移住し子供を授かりました。育児で制作する時間が限られる中、子育てと制作を同時にする試み＝赤ちゃんに見せる作品を考えた。赤ちゃんの視力は0.1以下で視界はモノクロです。コントラストのある白・黒が伝わりやすいため、黒い色のメリー（アンリ・マティスの「ダンス」を引用）を制作しました。マティスはダンスⅡを制作した時期、プリミティブ・アートに惹かれていたようです。赤ちゃんに作品は届くのか原始的な試みです。

「２つだけ断言できる 君を愛してて 僕はアーティストじゃない 言ってほっとしたよ アーティストじゃない」 ウディ・アレン（『ブロードウェイと銃弾』、1994年）
作家の制作と生活を考える中で、ウディ・アレンの「ブロードウェイと銃弾」を思いました。主人公の最後の台詞が私には印象深い。一昨年アンリ・マティスの足跡を辿った際にも作家の人生について考えた。マティスの言葉を経典と解釈し、写経をヒントにした「ニース」（ギャラリーαM、2023年）の続きでもあります。

「制作はまず、作品にある程度似た習作によって自分の気持ちを豊かにすることから始まり、そこから作品の要素が決まってくる。その習作が、画家の無意識を解放させる。ある時からそれはもはや私ではなく、一つの啓示となる。あとは私はそれに打ち込むのみである」

人生の半分は過ぎたと思う私は、ふと作家の晩年について知りたくなり、興味のあったアンリ・マティスのニース時代の足跡を昨年辿りました。彼は「野獣派」から南仏の気候で穏やかな作風へと変わったようです。マティスの言葉を「経典」と解釈してみると、作品は写経に見えなくもない。そんな気がしてきました。
キワと中心のパラドックス

平山昌尚は、テーブルの上から落ちるか落ちないかのギリギリの場所にモノを置くことに固執している——文字どおり、そのような状況を撮影した写真作品を作っている。その時のモノには「落ちる／落ちない」の状態が重なっているが、平山の作品全体も異なる二つの領域の重なりを意識させるキワに存在している。平山の作品は、子供が描いたかのような純粋な「お絵描き」なのか／読解を誘うコンセプチュアル・アートなのか、イラストなのか／絵画なのか、難解なのか／おふざけなのか。それらはアヒルとウサギのだまし絵のようで、観者の関心や理解によって作品の意味や文脈が変わる。美術やデザインのキワに立ち、造形的ボキャブラリーやパラドックスを駆使して、ひょうひょうとした謎めくユーモアを生み出している。
ただし、彼はキワモノの作家ではない。なぜなら平山の作品にはケレン味がなく、描くこと・作ることに対する本質的な問いを投げかけるからだ。最小限のツールとプロセスで組み立てられる図像、象形文字を想起させる絵画と言語の関係性、色彩や線の大胆な単純化は、観者に「欠如」を意識させ、制作やイメージの根本に立ち返らせる。つまり、キワに立ちながら、そこが中心＝本質にもなる、というパラドックスをここでも読み取ることが可能である。
そう考えていた私でも、彼がモダニズム絵画を代表する画家アンリ・マティスを参照すると知った時は驚いた。だがこれは美術史に対するジェスチャーではなく、芸術家の生に対する個別的な関心のようである。平山は、マティスがパリを離れ、地中海に面するニース（フランスのキワに位置する）へ移住したことに注目した。これまで平山は、作家の人生と切り離された抽象的な場所で、クールでユーモラスな作品を展開させてきたといえる。だが、今回の平山には、人生と作品、あるいは現実の地理的なキワが中心的なテーマとして提示されている。ここに、開発とは何かを再開発する思考実験が認められるかもしれない。

Dear Urs, I’m sorry for being late. I just got an idea for the book. Do you know the experience of falling asleep while you start reading a book? Or, — I don’t know the precise words — a book that is sleeping on the bookshelf forever? It means, you don’t read the book you bought. And the book is on the bookshelf forever. I just want to make such a book. Of course this book will also be going on the bookshelf to sleep there forever. Most of pages are horizontal lines that represent texts that you really don’t understand or that are boring.

La Cobata
2022
La Congiunta, the museum where I visited in 2009 and it took me 2 hours by train and buses from Zurich. The museum is located at the village of Giornico surrounded by the beautiful mountains, south of Switzerland and housed in a modern building designed by architect Peter Märkli. There are no staff working at the museum meaning a key needs to be retrieved from the bar nearby. The museum itself contains a collection of reliefs and sculptures created by Hans Josephsohn during the period of 1950-1990. There is no artificial lighting so that you can appreciate the art with natural lighting. Josephsohn’s art gives the impression of one with the surrounding environment, the building and the path to it. Last year, I visited a building that used to be a store in Teshima. It is located on the island of Setouchi and takes an hour from Takamatsu by walk and boat. The store is used as a warehouse so there are no staff working there, which means the key also needs to be borrowed at a house nearby. Inside of the building, there is a table, a washing machine and some cardboard boxes illuminated by natural light without any presence of artificial lighting. I named this building La Cobata by adding “La” to the outside sign of “Cobata” as I found something in common with La Congiunta. I searched the name of La Cobata and discovered that it was a Mexican place name and an archaeological site of Olmec culture (a stone head sculpture). This story of La Cobata is reminiscent of a childhood game called broken telephone.
